Calling a bash script from a python file stops python execution

I have a python script that is calling a bash script. The call works fine. However, when the bash script is finished, it doesn't return back to the python script run. I thought putting an "exit 1" would work but it doesn't. Any ideas? Python code:

d = subprocess.Popen(["bash", "./slack_message.sh", "-d", "{}".format(message)])
print("testing")

bash code:

cmd=$(curl -X POST -H 'Content-type: application/json' --data "$DATA" slack_hook_url); exit 1; 

"testing" never gets outputted which its supposed to
