android pay - How does the communication work between a terminal and a backend after using a giftcard in Google Pay for Passes?

Question

We are developing a giftcard web app, where merchants can create X number of giftcards to their customers. We would like that customers add and use their giftcards through Google Pay for Passes. We are currently investigating this, but the problem is that we are not sure about what is the flow after the card has been submited to the terminal (via NFC or Barcode).

Ideally we would like to receive the giftcard code in our backend, and process the transaction, but I'm not sure how the communication works between the terminal and our backend

Could someone explain in detail?
