yaml - Bibliography references do not render in Rmarkdown

Question

Added below to yaml in RMarkdown document. dcf_bibliography.bib file is in the appropriate directory but no references show after knitting PDF. PDF knitted successfully.

 bibliography: dcf_bibliography.bib
 nocite: '@*'

Alternatively attempted adding a '# References' section at end of a RMarkdown document.
