gradle - Lsp4j JSON RPC library throwing NoClassDefFoundError exception on Android 21

Question

I'm using the eclipse lsp4j library to connect to a remote language server. My app needs to support API Level 21 systems, and this exception is not thrown on newer android versions. (I tested on API level 30). I'm kind of at a loss on how to possibly fix it.

This is the code I have to connect to the language server:

I'm guessing there is some sort of compatibility issue with the lsp4j library, but I'm not sure where to begin in how to debug that. My Gradle config for context with relevant dependencies:
