directory - Counting directories

Question

Let's say I have a directory that looks like this:

[root@server mysql]# ls
user1_database1
user1_database2
user1_database3
user2_database1
user2_database2
user3_database2
user4_database3
[root@server mysql]#

How would I go about sorting this list to count the amount of databases for each user? Like so:

user1: 3
user2: 2
user3: 1
user4: 1

Ideally I want it sorted too, displaying the users with the highest number of databases first.
