visual studio code - "Clone repository in container volume" for non-public repo

I have a repo set up with a .devcontainer and it's generally working well. However I am having big performance issues with node_modules.

The most straightforward and sensible fix for that seems to be to use the "clone repository in container volume" command as described here. However it's not working for me, as my repo is on GitHub Enterprise and is protected with SSH auth.

If I use git@mygithub:foo/repo.git, I get permission denied (publickey), even though I am able to clone with this path from a regular terminal.

If I use https://mygithub/foo/repo.git, I get "git clone failed, could not read username for https://mygithub: no such device or address".

Does this feature not work in this scenario?
