What do you mean by unselected.
Can you share an image of what you are trying to achieve and where you are at now..
I wouldn't recommend your approach. It does a lot of things which are not needed to solve your problem. I suggest making use of the icon and text from the TabLayout class and just set your icons(drawables with states) and text.
Or, even a custom layout if required, but making use of the text1 and icon from the TabLayout. Do you have any issues doing this?

Override getPageTitle in your viewpager adapter to provide title.

Additionally, if you want you can get icons too from the adapter by writing a method that returns drawables, just like the getPageTitle method. That's optional. Just a matter of design.
