import - How to use a 2D STEP file in Gmsh

I'm just learning Gmsh and wonder now, how I can use a STEP file for geometry. If I define 2D points and lines inside the Gmsh UI and then set plane surface, all lines are considered to be connected.

If I draw a 2D geometry e.g. with FreeCAD sketcher and the geometry is definitely closed, after import in Gmsh I cannot set plane surface since all lines of the geometry seem to be disconnected. I can select all separate lines but than I don't know how to set this as surface. Also setting 2D mesh doesn't work so I think the geometry is not recognized as figure as a whole.

If I use a 3D geometry from FreeCAD, all is directly recognised, so basically I need a hint for 2D geometries from STEP files.
