encoding - Converting a decimal number to equivalent excess-3 code

I couldn't find any complete reference for converting a given decimal digit to excess-3 code.
But here is what I understood -
Given 39 first I could write it as (0011)(1001) now add 3 to each part = (0110)(1100)
Now should I write it as 01101100 and convert this binary to decimal to get the decimal
equivalent of the excess-3 code ?
