Recently some major internet giants (Amazon, Google, Apple, etc.) have engaged in an effort to deplatform individuals and organizations who are enabling speech that could be considered inciting or toxic. Whether this is merited isn't my question. I'm just trying to think through what an upstart Web hosting company must do if they wanted to have absolutely no dependencies on major corporations. If the only dependency was the right to use public utilities and their community-owned fiber optic cables, how would such a company get assigned a digital presence on the global network, namely IP addresses to which they can attach nameservers? Do the IP addresses simply need to not be already taken? Or are IP addresses assigned in blocks by governing authorities? If so, are those governing authorities actual government agencies?
In this scenario, such an upstart company would favor a governing authority which happens to be a public government agency rather than a corporation.
The question is how a hosting company can get set up with IP addresses and nameservers with absolutely no dependencies on a major corporation to accede to this.
